ALLIANCES & JOINT VENTURES
Horizon Kinetics LLC
Horizon Kinetics LLC (“Horizon Kinetics” or “Firm”) is an independently owned and operated investment boutique with approximately $9.2 billion in assets under management as of 12/31/2014. Horizon Kinetics, through its wholly owned subsidiaries, is a research driven, fundamentals-oriented asset manager and research publisher serving institutions, individuals, and financial professionals. The Firm’s founders and lead investors have worked together for over twenty five years, dating back to their tenure at Bankers Trust Company. The Firm has over 80 employees and has primary offices in New York City and Westchester, New York.
Horizon Kinetics’ long-term, fundamental value-oriented investment philosophy remains unchanged since the founding of its subsidiary investment advisors, Horizon Asset Management LLC (“Horizon”) and Kinetics Asset Management LLC (“Kinetics”) in 1994 and 1996 respectively. The Firm seeks to capitalize on the long-term price inefficiencies that can be created by the collective, short-term focus of the markets and believes an “equity yield curve” exists, much like the commonly accepted debt yield curve. The Firm believes dynamic unconventional thinking is required to find successful long-term investments. Therefore, the investment team often takes contrarian views, avoiding reliance upon on conventional benchmark-oriented parameters while emphasizing predictive attributes (spin-offs, owner operated companies, dormant/hidden assets, among others) that are verifiable but not always readily quantifiable.
Independent Research – Publishing proprietary research has been the cornerstone of the Firm’s investment process since Horizon’s founding in 1994. Horizon Kinetics believes its intellectual capability is their most important asset which they offer to clients through investment advisory services and research products. The Firm also believes its non-traditional approach to research, which serves as the foundation for its security selection process, sets its work apart from mainstream investors, as demonstrated by its consistently high long-term peer performance rankings and lower excess return correlations compared to peers.
Investment Strategies – Horizon Kinetics, through its wholly owned registered investment advisers, offers separately managed accounts, mutual funds and alternative investment products suitable for individual and institutional investors. The Firm’s independent investment process has generally produced consistent results over the long-term.
Equity Strategies: The Firm has an absolute return mindset and constructs portfolios based on explicit research and broad investment guidelines. Portfolios tend to be concentrated and do not attempt to track or mimic any benchmark or index. Through its independent investment process, the Firm seeks to produce superior risk-adjusted returns that are generally less correlated with the strategies’ respective peers, making the Firm’s strategies a potentially attractive addition to investors’ broader asset allocations.
Liquid Alternative Strategies: Horizon Kinetics’ liquid alternative strategies seek to generate stable income and total return utilizing both fixed income securities and equity options. The portfolios’ fixed income collateral exposures emphasize liquidity and adhere to a tiered risk framework aimed at limiting duration and credit risk. Further, the portfolios seek to monetize market volatility and collect additional cash premiums by writing liquid and exchange traded options on a diversified set of indexes or common stocks. The Firm believes its multifaceted approach provides concurrent, cumulative cash flows from the persistent collection of equity option premiums and bond income which reduce losses during market declines, resulting in a lower expected return volatility and the potential for higher risk-adjusted returns over time.
Horizon Kinetics is the sub-advisor to the UOB Paradigm Fund, a series of the UOB Global Strategies Funds Plc.
